The Board of Directors of the Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars is pleased to announce the creation of two $1000 scholarships for UCLA student participants in the 2008 “Legends of China” program.

The Dashew Board is chaired by Mr. Stanley Dashew, the generous benefactor and creator of the Dashew Center.  Mr. Dashew has enjoyed an illustrious career as a businessman and entrepreneur and has dedicated himself to creating a more peaceful and understanding world through support of people-to-people international experiences for UCLA students.  Co-Presidents Michael Ning and Randy Snyder oversee the day-to-day work of the Dashew Center Board.

The two students selected for the scholarship will:

1)  Demonstrate financial need.  Students should be able to show that the financial burden of participation is significant and requires a significant level of personal sacrifice.  Applicants receiving financial aid should explain the types and amounts of aid they are receiving as evidence of their need.

2)  Demonstrate how participation in the Legends of China program will contribute to their educational, personal and professional development in significant ways.

3)  Demonstrate how, after returning from the program in China, they will share their learning and experience with fellow students and the larger UCLA community.

Application process:

The application process is very simple. Student applicants are to prepare a 200- 400 word essay addressing the 3 selection criteria above. This essay is to be delivered in electronic form (a Microsoft Word document attachment) to the selection committee to Ms. Roseanne Gutierrez , Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars, at the following email address.
rgutierrez@saonet.ucla.edu

Each application is to be accompanied with a cover sheet with the applicant’s name, current mailing address, UCLA student identification number, phone number and email.  The cover sheet should also explain the status of the student’s application to the Legends of China program (e.g. “I submitted my application on February 01”) and explain the status of any payment submitted to the Legends of China program (e.g. “I have paid my deposit and will make full payment on March 01).

Ms Palafox will acknowledge receipt of your application via email response.

Application deadline

Completed applications will be due to Ms. Gutierrez by March 01, 2008.  Faxed, handwritten, or mailed applications will not be accepted, only those delivered via the required electronic format.

Selection process

Our selection committee consists of 3 members of the Board of Directors of the Dashew Center and a Dashew Center staff representative.  Applications will be evaluated on the basis of the applicant’s ability to address the selection criteria.  The committee will attempt to equally weigh each of the criteria and will score applications on that basis.  Incomplete applications or applications submitted without the complete cover letter will not be considered.

Decision

Applicants selected for the scholarships will be notified no later than April 15, 2007.  The selection committee realizes that the payment schedule for the Legends of China program means that payment for the program is due close to the time of scholarship selection and that applicants may be in a position of paying for the program prior to receiving notice of selection.

Applicants who are in a situation where they are unable to make the required payment in sufficient time (and who have not heard a decision from the selection committee) should contact the Legends of China UCLA coordinator, Mr. Monroe Gorden to discuss their situation.  Mr. Gorden can be contacted at mgorden@saonet.ucla.edu.

All other questions about the scholarship may be directed to Ms. Rose Anne Gutierrez at rgutierrez@saonet.ucla.edu or by phone at 310-825-3104.
